In this episode of Florida NewsMakers, Ron Sachs sits down with Florida Secretary of State, Ken Detzner. Secretary Detzner says lawmakers are making upgrades to past reform efforts despite the fact that Democrats claim those changes were a result of the Republican-controlled Legislature. "These are improvements on a platform that was built in 2011 and they are enhancements," he tells Sachs. Secretary Detzner also talks about "Viva Florida 500," the state's celebration of the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival on Florida's east coast.

On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program Ken Lawson, Secretary of the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation, sits down with Sachs Media Group's Alia Faraj-Johnson. Their discussion highlights Lawson's efforts to streamline licensing and regulatory processes to help boost Florida's economy. With more than 1 million licensees, Lawson's agency oversees a wide range of professions and occupations, from engineers to cosmetologists to mixed martial arts trainers. "Over the last several years, what we are proud that as a department, we reduced the timing it takes for a person to get a professional license," Lawson tells Faraj-Johnson. "Back in 2008 it took 41 days on average for someone to get their license. But now with technology and my people's hard work, it takes less ...

On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program, Florida Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Charles T. Corley sits down with Sachs Media Group's Trimmel Gomes to discuss issues facing Florida's 4.5 million seniors. Thanks to a steady influx of baby boomers and recent retirees, demographers expect Florida will soon only trail California and Texas as the most populous state in the nation. "Elders have always been a critical part of [Florida] not just in numbers but what they contribute to our state," Secretary Corley tells Gomes. "Not only do they contribute to the economy through the services that they employ, through the purchases that they make, seniors are homeowners at a rate far higher than any other segment of the population." But one of the biggest issues facing Florida's seniors is ...

On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program, Secretary Herschel Vinyard of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection sits down with Sachs Media Group's Trimmel Gomes. Their discussion includes the state's lawsuit against Georgia over water use, as well as ongoing efforts to improve Florida's own water quality standards. After 20 years of failed negotiations, the State of Florida has taken Georgia to court claiming the Peach State's water use policies are putting the economic future of Apalachicola Bay and Northwest Florida in jeopardy. "We wouldn't have filed this lawsuit if we didn't think we were going to win," Vinyard says of Georgia's failure to share water that flows between the two states. Even as that court battle moves forward, Florida scored a major victory when the U.S....
On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program, Florida Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Elizabeth Dudek sits down with Sachs Media Group's Trimmel Gomes to discuss the state's transition to Medicaid Managed Care. The overhaul of Florida's massive $22 billion Medicaid program is being touted as a simpler way for Floridians to go to a single provider for comprehensive care. "We're getting rid of some fragmentation," Secretary Dudek tells Gomes, describing the sometimes-confusing menu of coverage options for Floridians. "Right now you can be fee-for-service, you can be in MediPass, you can be under a waiver, you can be under nursing home diversion, you can be under managed care, we're going to go to one system so it won't be fragmented that way." The Medicaid system serves more...
On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program, Secretary Ananth Prasad of the Florida Department of Transportation sits down with Sachs Media Group's Michelle Ubben to discuss successes from the state's 2014 legislative session. As federal transportation funds dwindle, Prasad praised Florida lawmakers for making a historical investment in the state's transportation needs. "$10.1 billion, that's a record ever invested in transportation infrastructure in the state of Florida," Prasad tells Ubben. When it comes to Legislature's proposal to increase the speed limit by 5 mph on certain roads and highways, Prasad said safety will be the primary determining factor. "Generally our roads are not build to handle 75-80 miles an hour. Now people drive faster and there is that element of tolerance ther...

On this week's "Florida NewsMakers" program, Gray Swoope, Florida's Secretary of Commerce and president and CEO of Enterprise Florida, sits down with Sachs Media Group's Alia Faraj-Johnson. Their discussion centers on efforts to create jobs and attract new business to the state. One mission of the state's economic development arm is to cultivate competitive projects that create jobs, and Secretary Swoope says more than 350 of those projects have been won during Governor Rick Scott's administration. "That's where Enterprise Florida and our team work relentlessly -- to win those projects so Florida families can have jobs," Swoope tells Faraj-Johnson. When it comes to recruiting those companies, tax incentives are a very important part of the economic development process, Swoope says, adding...

After meeting with Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday in Tallahassee, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said he was withdrawing Florida from consideration for new oil and gas drilling leases. Zinke had created a political uproar in Florida last week when he announced his department was proposing opening waters off the Atlantic Coast and Florida Keys to new drilling leases as part of a five-year plan. The eastern Gulf of Mexico would have been opened to drilling after a moratorium expires in 2022. Scott said he opposed the plan and requested a meeting with Zinke to ask that Florida be removed from consideration. In making the announcement Tuesday with Scott at the Tallahassee airport, Zinke said seismic testing still would be allowed but there would be no new oil drilling or platforms. A compromise...
